SENTENCE & ITS TYPES
While we speak, we make use of group of words. Such a group of words that conveys a complete sense is called a sentence. But the words are arranged in a definite order in a sentence. Then alone it imparts a complete and clear sense.
Look at the sentence given below.
A a cat mat sat on.
your show ticket please.
The words given above form groups but they cannot be called sentence because they are not arranged in a definite order and do not make any sense.
A cat sat on a mat.
Beware of cheats.
The group of word given above are called sentence because the words are arranged in a definite order in them and they convey a complete sense.
Definition- A Sentence is a group of words put together in a certain order giving complete sense.
OR
A sentence is a group of words which conveys complete sense.
Every Sentence is made up of two parts- (i) Subject and (ii) Predicate
(i) Subject is the word or words about which something is said. In the Sentence "Indu is well-versed in the art of painting", the word Indu is the Subject.
(ii)Predicate is the word or words which says or say something about the Subject. In the sentence given above "is well-versed in the art of painting" is the Predicate.
Please note that- The Subject of a sentence generally comes at the beginning. However, sometimes it may be put after the Predicate to make the sentence more emphatic. It can also be put in the middle (interior) or at the end of the sentence.
There are five kinds of Sentences. They are:
(a) Declarative or Assertive:- A Sentence that makes a statement is called an Assertive Sentence.
e.g- I am going to school
He will come soon.
(b) Interrogative Sentence:- A Sentence that asks a question is called an interrogative sentence.
e.g- What is your name?
Are you a student?
(c) Imperative Sentence:- A Sentence that expresses an order, a request or a piece of advice is called an imperative sentence.
e.g- Bring a glass of water.
please help me.
(d) Optative Sentence:- A Sentence that expresses some curse, blessing, prayer or wish is called an optative sentence.
e.g- May God help you!
May you live long!
(e) Exclamatory Sentence:- A Sentence that expresses some sudden or syrong feeling of mind is called an exclamatory sentence.
e.g- What a beautiful scene it is!
Alas! I am ruined.
