SUMMARY OF 'THE LAST LESSON' CLASS 12th ENGLISH (NCERT)

'The Last Lesson' was written by Alphonse Daudet about the year 1871 in which France was defeated by Prussia led by Bismarck.  And the French District of Alsace and Lorraine have passed into Prussian hands. The new Prussian ruler discontinued the teaching of France and was ordered that only the German language was taught in the School. The French teacher was asked to leave. Now M. Hamel could no longer stay in his old school as he was a French teacher. But still gave his last lesson to his student with the same sincerity as ever. Franz  was a  such child in the school of M. Hamel who dreaded French class and was in great dread of a scolding, especially because M. Hamel told that he would question him on participles, and he did not know the first world about them. Came to the school that day and thinking he would be punished as he had not learned his lesson on participles.

But on reaching school he found that M. Hamel dressed in his fine Sunday clothes and the old men of the village were sitting there quietly in the back of the class room. It was due to the order from Berlin. As that was the last lesson in French and that was the first day when Franz realized for the first  time that how important French language for him.
